If your Instant Pot lid does not open after cooking, this is usually due to the pressure indicator (the small valve that pops up during cooking) remaining stuck in the raised position. This issue is almost always caused by food residue (particularly from starchy or sweet dishes) entering the steam valve and not being properly cleaned afterward.

How the Safety Mechanism Works

Instant Pot multicookers feature a reliable and widely used safety system that automatically locks the lid during pressure cooking. This is achieved through a small steam valve that rises due to internal pressure, physically preventing the lid from turning.

Once pressure is released and the valve drops, the lid can be opened. However, if food particles enter the valve during cooking, they can cause the valve to stick and prevent it from lowering — making it seem as though the lid is still under pressure.

Recommended Solution

To resolve this, a thorough cleaning of the lid and valve components is required:

  1. Remove the steam valve and anti-block shield (also known as the food debris filter) from the inside of the lid. These parts are designed to be easily detachable.

  2. Clean all parts thoroughly with hot water and a grease-dissolving detergent. A dishwasher can also be used for effective cleaning.

  3. Soak the parts if needed, especially if they feel sticky or show visible food residue.

  4. Ensure that no food particles remain in the valve opening or on any of the components. All parts must move freely and feel smooth.

Consult your Instant Pot user manual for specific instructions and diagrams related to cleaning the steam valve and lid components.

Important Note

This issue is typically not a product defect but a maintenance-related issue. If the unit is returned for inspection and the problem is found to be due to improper cleaning or user error, service fees will apply. These include inspection, cleaning, and return shipping, starting from €35 excluding VAT and shipping costs.

We highly recommend following the above steps before requesting a service inspection. In most cases, this will fully resolve the issue.
